Chief Gary Batton of the 200,000 member Choctaw Nation has been announced as the 2019 commencement speaker for Southeastern Oklahoma State University on May 11, 2019. He will speak at both ceremonies on the day at 10 am and 2 pm.
The Choctaw Chief assumed office in 2014 with a stated goal of improving the lives of the Choctaw people. Much of his work involves protecting Choctaw culture and providing healthcare, education and employment opportunities.
Chief Batton has also provided leadership in business, and the Choctaw Nation has more than 70 businesses in 13 different industries. Under his direction, the Nation opened a tribal headquarters and regional health clinic in Durant.
The SOSU administration and soon-to-be graduates are said to be very excited about hearing the speech slated to be delivered by Chief Batton, and the business acumen of the Choctaw Chief is admired on campus and within Southeast Oklahoma.
